This was painted under commission
in 1963. It is a catamaran which was built in a back yard in Toronto and
took a crew of four young men about three years to build. They worked round
the clock and were able to do this because they worked different shifts
at their regular jobs. The twin hulls were formed from quarter inch steel
plate and the steel ribs inside the hulls were all welded construction.
Each hull had two cabins inside with sleeping quarters. The mast was forty
five feet in height. The sail and jib had to be made to order from a sail
manufacturer. I had the opportunity of sailing on the boat with the crew
and it did about eight knots on Lake Ontario with no problem. To put the
boat into the lake a crane was hired that had to lift the craft over top
of the house from the back yard where it was placed on a flat bed and driven
to the lakeshore.
It was the dream and product
of Robin Pycock and three of his friends. I have forgotten the friends'
names but I remember Robin well. We worked together as design draftsmen
in the '60's.
